Recent Protests and Government Response
Funerals held last week for protesters became focal points for dissent, with mourners reportedly chanting slogans critical of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Demonstrations have included calls of ”death to the dictators,” marking the largest nationwide protests as the 2022 unrest sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini while in the custody of morality police for allegedly violating hijab rules.
The 2022 protests, initially centered on women’s rights, resulted in a violent government crackdown and the deaths of over 300 people. The current wave of protests differs in its primary driver, focusing on a significant decline in living standards and spreading beyond Tehran to cities and towns across the country.
Authorities have deployed riot police, utilizing tear gas against demonstrators. At least two deaths were reported in Lordegan,a city in southwestern Iran,as a direct result of the clashes.
International involvement and Warnings
former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning that the United States would intervene should further protesters be killed, a statement condemned by the Iranian Foreign Ministry as an attempt to “escalate tensions.” Iranian officials vowed a “swift, decisive, and comprehensive” response should Trump follow through with any action.
Trump’s warning followed U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear sites approximately six months prior. The U.S. State Department has publicly expressed support for the protesters, sharing footage of demonstrations on social media and acknowledging the “courage of the Iranian people” and their “resolve in the face of repression.”
Conflicting Reports on Casualties and Arrests
State-aligned Iranian media reports at least 10 deaths since last wednesday, including two individuals identified as members of a paramilitary group linked to the Revolutionary Guards. However, the human rights organization Hengaw reports a higher number of arrests – 132 in total, including 12 women and children – and a different death toll.
In response to Trump’s warning, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, an Iranian politician, stated on social media that the U.S. President’s words rendered “all American bases and forces across the region legitimate targets” in the event of perceived U.S. intervention.
