Iran UN: No Negotiations Under Pressure
Putin: Iran Declined Russian Air Defense Role Offer
Updated June 18,2025
Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Iran turned down a Russian proposal for joint work on air defense systems. He added that such systems were not part of the strategic partnership agreement signed by Moscow and tehran in January.
In a televised interview Wednesday, Putin clarified that the agreement did not extend to defense matters.
Putin said Russia had previously offered Iran collaboration on anti-air systems. “We once proposed to our Iranian friends to work together on anti-air systems, but our partners did not show any great interest,” he said.
Putin also addressed past arms supplies to Iran. “As far as individual supplies are concerned, yes, of course, we made those at the time, but this has nothing to do wiht the crisis today,” Putin said, without specifying the timing of the offer or the supplies.
What’s next
It remains to be seen how this revelation will affect the relationship between Russia and Iran, especially in light of ongoing regional tensions.
