Background‍ on Nuclear Concerns

In 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the ‌United States from the international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, wich had been ⁣concluded with major world powers three years prior.

Following the U.S. ‌withdrawal, ⁤Washington reinstated sanctions against Tehran. In response, Iran began to roll⁤ back its commitments under the agreement, limiting its nuclear⁢ program.

Upon⁤ returning to the White House, Trump pursued ‌a policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran, calling for negotiations on a new agreement⁢ with ⁤Tehran.

The United States has not maintained formal diplomatic relations ‌with Iran since 1980.

Recent Dialog

Despite the lack of formal relations, Trump indicated on Monday that‍ the ⁣indirect negotiations scheduled for Saturday had been‍ “very good.” Araqchi has also stated that negotiations ⁣with washington are “advancing.”
