Background on Nuclear Concerns
Western powers, led by the United States, have long suspected Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has consistently denied these accusations, asserting it’s right to develop a nuclear program for peaceful, civilian purposes.
In 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, wich had been concluded with major world powers three years prior.
Following the U.S. withdrawal, Washington reinstated sanctions against Tehran. In response, Iran began to roll back its commitments under the agreement, limiting its nuclear program.
Upon returning to the White House, Trump pursued a policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran, calling for negotiations on a new agreement with Tehran.
The United States has not maintained formal diplomatic relations with Iran since 1980.
Recent Dialog
Despite the lack of formal relations, Trump indicated on Monday that the indirect negotiations scheduled for Saturday had been “very good.” Araqchi has also stated that negotiations with washington are “advancing.”
