South Korea is weighing possible “contributions” to United States security efforts in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a diplomatic warning from Iran against any deployment in the strategic waterway. Seoul stated that any decision would depend on ensuring its own military readiness was not compromised, and stressed that no final decision had been taken.
Tehran Warns Against Foreign Deployment and Prepares Exclusion Zone
Iran’s Foreign Ministry warned South Korea on Monday that participating in United States military operations around the Strait of Hormuz would have “serious consequences”. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated that Tehran views any military deployment by other countries in the Persian Gulf or the strait as direct support for the side responsible for what Iran describes as aggression. Baqaei also accused Washington of putting pressure on South Korea. Alongside these diplomatic warnings, Mohsen Rezaei, the newly appointed head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said the proposed exclusion zone could extend from the area of the United States naval blockade of Iranian ports toward the Strait of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf. According to Rezaei, vessels entering the designated area with the intention of passing through the strait and identified by Iranian authorities could be placed on Iran’s sanctions list, though enforcement methods and exact boundaries remain unclear.
Shipping Disruptions and Global Energy Supplies
The diplomatic friction follows renewed US-Iran military exchanges in and around the strait following several weeks of relative calm. The United States has been using naval forces, including more than 20 warships, to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports and prevent Iranian oil exports. Meanwhile, Iran has claimed attacks against United States military assets in and around the strait, though the US military has rejected some of those claims. The escalating conflict continues to disrupt commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route that normally carries roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. United States Energy Secretary Chris Wright reported that around 9 million barrels of oil per day continue to move through the strait alongside regional pipeline flows, with combined flows probably at least two-thirds of pre-conflict levels. However, Iran continues to require vessels to seek permission before transiting, rejecting a return to the pre-war system of unrestricted navigation.
Diplomatic Stance and Search for Guarantees
Regarding broader diplomacy, Rezaei indicated that Tehran remains sceptical about restarting negotiations with Washington without stronger guarantees. Referencing previous mediation efforts involving Pakistan, Qatar, and Oman, Rezaei said Iran had expected mediators to intervene if either side violated an agreement. Tehran is now seeking negotiations accompanied by guarantees as fighting and economic pressure continue.
