A group of 14 Iranian American women in elected office and civic leadership released a letter on April 7, 2026, calling for an immediate end to the military conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The signatories, who include city councilmembers, state legislators, and Democratic Party delegates, expressed urgency as President Donald Trump continued to issue threats against Iranian civilian infrastructure and the population.
The appeal comes amid escalating tensions and a looming deadline following a threat from President Trump that a whole civilization will die tonight
if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The President has also threatened to destroy civilian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges. According to reports, the U.S. And Israel have already carried out numerous attacks targeting civilian sites across Iran.
Among the most prominent signers of the letter is Representative Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat from Arizona and the first Iranian American Democrat elected to Congress. The group argued that military force is an ineffective tool for establishing democratic governance.
We believe democracy cannot be delivered through missiles, and freedom cannot emerge from destruction and more death of innocent lives.

The letter further states that the current war is encouraging the Iranian government to increase its domestic crackdowns. The signatories rejected the false choice between repression at home and devastation from abroad,
asserting that both options deny the Iranian people the right to determine their own future.
Justifications for the Conflict
The current military operation, which President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched in February 2026, was designed to target Iran’s missile capabilities. The administration has cited the Iranian government’s suppression of anti-government protests as a justification for the war. This includes the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom
movement, which began after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, and another wave of protests earlier in 2026.
During a press conference at the Pentagon on April 6, 2026, President Trump referenced the great women march
and described the use of government snipers to suppress demonstrators. Prime Minister Netanyahu also invoked the Woman, Life, Freedom
movement by name in Farsi during a speech in June 2025 to justify Israeli-led military actions against Iran.
The signers of the April 7 letter countered these justifications, stating that the call for change in Iran originates from grassroots movements within its own borders. They emphasized that the struggle for equality and democratic accountability is grounded in the lived experience of Iranians who have faced decades of censorship, imprisonment, and executions.
Religious Framing and Legal Challenges
The letter also condemned the framing of the conflict by U.S. Officials. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has reportedly used public appearances and Pentagon worship services to describe the war against Iran as a holy war
or a Christian crusade.
The signatories argued that such rhetoric violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which prohibits the state from endorsing a specific religious worldview as the basis for military action or public policy.
On April 6, 2026, Representative Ansari announced her intention to file articles of impeachment against Secretary Hegseth. She cited repeated war crimes,
specifically highlighting the bombing of a school that resulted in the deaths of scores of young girls.
Iranians deserve freedom and democracy. That cannot be delivered through bombs and destruction of civilian infrastructure. Iran’s future must be determined by Iranians alone — free from war and authoritarian rule.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari, April 6, 2026
Divided Diaspora Reactions
The war has created deep divisions within the Iranian American community. While some seek a peaceful resolution through negotiations, others support military action to overthrow the current regime. Representative Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma, the first Iranian American elected to Congress, expressed support for the strikes on February 28, 2026, stating that it was time for Iranians to take back their nation
to bring peace to the Middle East.
Representative Ansari has indicated she will support a War Powers Resolution that House Democrats intend to bring to the floor. She noted that while she desires a free Iran rooted in dignity and democracy, the administration has failed to provide Congress with a comprehensive plan or a sufficient justification for the conflict, which she described as an illegal war.
