Iran Reports Significant Progress in defense Sector Under Seventh Development Plan
Iran’s defense sector is experiencing significant advancements, with officials expressing confidence in its continued progress. Speaking before parliament regarding the first year of implementation of the Seventh development Plan, the defense chief highlighted achievements that are being viewed as a source of national pride.
A key focus of the defense ministry has been increased private sector involvement.New regulations were issued in Febuary 2024 to facilitate this, alongside the establishment of a dedicated defense cooperation centre designed to streamline partnerships. This push for collaboration reflects a broader strategy to bolster domestic capabilities and reduce reliance on external sources.
To foster innovation, the ministry has also invested in research and development infrastructure, including the creation of a specialized think tank and the association of industry exhibitions. These initiatives aim to support long-term planning and the development of cutting-edge defense technologies.
Currently, 36 defense projects are underway. As of the first year of the Seventh Development Plan, 15 projects have reached 70-100% completion, five are approximately 70% complete, and another 16 are in the feasibility study phase. This indicates a diverse portfolio of projects progressing at varying stages of development.
A significant aspect of Iran’s defense strategy is the localization of production.582 defense-related items are now fully produced domestically, with 59% of this localization achieved through cooperation with the private sector. This includes critical components like steel, agricultural complexes, diesel engines, and specialized defense equipment.
Beyond conventional defense systems, the ministry is actively supporting aerospace projects, including the development of both satellites and their associated launch systems. Logistical support continues to be provided to both police forces and the Basij,a volunteer paramilitary organization.
Looking ahead, continued funding is crucial for the success of these ongoing initiatives. The defense chief has appealed to both parliament and the government to prioritize financial support for the defense sector to ensure sustained momentum and the realization of long-term strategic goals.
