Iran has released a video purporting to show commandos seizing two cargo vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to state media and verified reporting. The footage, shared by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, depicts armed, masked members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps scaling the hull of a container ship and taking control of its deck.
The IRGC stated that the seized vessels are the MSC Francesca, which sails under a Panamanian flag, and the Epaminondas, which is registered in Liberia. Both ships were directed toward Iranian coastal waters following the boarding operation, as confirmed by Iranian state media.
Panama’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the seizure of the MSC Francesca, describing the capture of a vessel sailing under its flag as illegal. The ministry emphasized that the ship was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it was seized and forcibly taken to Iranian territorial waters, calling the action a serious threat to maritime security and an unnecessary escalation.
The IRGC accused the crews of both vessels of tampering with navigational aid systems and jeopardizing maritime security while transiting the strategic waterway. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, personnel on the Epaminondas reported damage to its bridge after Iranian soldiers opened fire and hurled grenades from a gunboat.
Technomar Shipping Inc., the Greek-based operator of the Epaminondas, confirmed that the vessel had been boarded by Iranian soldiers. Sources at the intelligence firm Vanguard reported that the MSC Francesca was instructed to drop anchor approximately six miles off the coast of Iran, as reported by the BBC.
The incident occurred shortly after the IRGC announced it had captured two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, following the extension of a cease-fire. The military wing stated that the situation remained under its control after the boarding operations.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global maritime trade, and any disruption raises concerns about regional stability and the safety of commercial shipping lanes. International actors continue to monitor the situation amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
