Major General Majid Khademi, the intelligence chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in a joint United States and Israeli air strike on April 6, 2026. An official Iranian statement confirmed that Khademi was martyred during an attack carried out at dawn.

Israel claimed responsibility for the operation. Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, confirmed that General Khademi was a key target of the strike.

Role and Accusations

General Khademi served as the head of the IRGC’s Intelligence Organization. The United States had previously accused his unit of the violent suppression of anti-government protests that took place in January 2026.

The assassination follows a period of intensified targeting of Iranian security officials. According to reports, several top officials from the IRGC and the Iranian Intelligence Ministry were assassinated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on February 28, 2026. While many of his peers were killed during that wave of attacks, Khademi had managed to evade Israeli strikes until April 6.

Broader Campaign Against Iranian Leadership

The killing of General Khademi is part of a wider series of coordinated strikes by the U.S. And Israel against Iran’s senior leadership. On March 1, 2026, these forces carried out strikes that killed the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Broader Campaign Against Iranian Leadership

The Iranian state-run news agency IRNA confirmed the death of the 86-year-old Supreme Leader, who had ruled the country for more than three decades. The coordinated attack also killed Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law and grandson.

Several other high-ranking figures were killed during the March 1 strikes, including:

  • Ali Shamkhani, the 70-year-old secretary of Iran’s Defence Council and a close adviser to the Supreme Leader, who had also overseen nuclear programme negotiations with the United States.
  • General Abdolrahim Mousavi.
  • Mohammad Pakpour.
  • Aziz Nasirzadeh.
  • The commander-in-chief of the IRGC and Iran’s defence minister.

Iranian Response and Escalation

The Iranian government has reacted to these losses with condemnations and military retaliation. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian described the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei as an open declaration of war against Muslims, specifically citing Shia practitioners.

In a written message offering condolences, Pezeshkian characterized the event as the greatest trial facing the Islamic world today.

Following the deaths of the Supreme Leader and other senior officials, Iran has escalated its retaliatory strikes. Reports indicate that Iran has targeted U.S. Assets in the Gulf, including attacks that resulted in blasts in Dubai, Doha, and Manama.
