Iranian Singer Arrested for Concert Without Hijab
Iranian Singer Arrested After Defiant Hijabless Concert
Tehran, Iran – Popular Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi was arrested on Saturday following a defiant online concert where she performed without a hijab, her lawyer confirmed.
ahmadi’s lawyer, Milad Panahipour, told local media that he was unaware of his client’s whereabouts until news of her arrest in Mazandaran province surfaced. Two of ahmadi’s musicians, Ehsan Birghidar and Sohail Faqih Nasiri, were also arrested.
The arrests come just days after Ahmadi streamed a live concert on YouTube, a bold act of defiance against Iran’s strict morality laws that mandate hijab for women and restrict public performances by female singers.
In a powerful introduction too her performance, Ahmadi declared, “I want to sing for the people I love. This is a right that I could not ignore; singing for the land that I love dearly.”
Despite Iran’s restricted access to YouTube, the concert garnered over 74,000 views within 12 hours of its broadcast.
Ahmadi’s home was raided by security agents following the concert’s widespread online sharing, and she was summoned for questioning by the Tehran Security Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities announced their intention to immediately try Ahmadi after the concert aired.
This incident highlights the ongoing struggle for women’s rights in Iran. As the death of Mahsa amini in 2022, sparked the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, iranian women have been bravely challenging restrictive gendered morality laws. Ahmadi’s arrest underscores the risks they face in their fight for freedom of expression and bodily autonomy.
