After years of suffering in Iranian prisons, authorities in Tehran announced the execution of a dissident who held German citizenship, Jamshid Sharmad, and who demanded the restoration of the monarchy in the country.

Iran’s Judiciary Department’s Mizan website said on Monday: “Following the legal process and the final approval of the Supreme Court’s decision of the Judiciary Department, Jamshid Sharmahd was executed… this (Monday) morning.”

The Iranian statement did not provide additional details on the execution. Iran usually hangs death row prisoners before sunrise.

Who is Sharmahad?

Jamshid Sharmahd is a political and media activist who holds German citizenship and has been living in Los Angeles, USA since 2002.

The dissident, who was born in 1955, served as a spokesman for the “Kingdom of Iran Association”, which aimed to restore the monarchy, which ruled Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Sharmahd’s tragic journey began in the Iranian regime’s prisons when he was abducted by Iranian forces in August 2020 while in the emirate city of Dubai, before being forcibly transferred to Iran, according to Iranian media reports and Amnesty International.

Ghazal Sharmahd, the daughter of Iranian-German dissident Jamshid Sharmahd, said she would discuss her father’s fate with the American and German governments, after Tehran announced his execution, calling for his body to be handed over and the Iranian government to be punished.

Regarding his abduction, the Associated Press explained that tracking data showed that Sharmah’s mobile phone moved south from Dubai to the city of Al Ain on July 29, 2020, and crossed the border into the Sultanate of Oman before the signal stopped on June 30. Sohar city of Sultanate.

Two days later, Iran announced that it had arrested Sharmahad in a “complex operation” and the Intelligence Ministry released a photo of him blindfolded.

The Associated Press reported that Iran also accused Sharmah of revealing “secret information” about Iran’s Revolutionary Guard missile sites during a television program in 2017.

On Monday, Iran’s judicial authorities announced the death sentence of Iranian-German dissident Jamshid Sharmahad (69 years old), whom they were trying on “terrorism”-related charges.

“Pain and Panic”

male A report Amnesty International reported that Sharmahd was detained in Evin Prison in the Iranian capital, Tehran, but in late 2020, his family was informed that he was no longer allowed to speak about his place of detention.

During a phone call in March 2021, he said he had lost about 20 kg.

He also explained that he only has two teeth in good condition, but he can no longer eat without using his gums to chew, according to the report.

In July 2023, his daughter, Ghazala Sharmad, revealed details of her phone calls with him, which she said came after a long period of “resisting phone conversations” from him. He asked through his account on the “X” platform, whether it was a “farewell call”.

She added that her father’s voice was “weak” and that he was “very ill, and he had been alone for more than a thousand days in a room suffering from pain and terror.”

After Iran announced his death sentence, his daughter said Tuesday that she would speak to the German government and the US State Department about whether there was any evidence of her father’s murder, calling for his body to be handed over and “the Iranian government to be punished.”

He insisted that if evidence of his murder was found, they should recover his body for a proper burial, stressing the need for the Iranian government to face “serious consequences now”.

For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the execution of the Iranian-German dissident, describing what happened as a “scandal”.

He wrote on the “X” platform: “I condemn in the strongest terms the scandal of execution of Iranian ruler Jamshid Sharmahd,” adding that the latter “did not have the opportunity to defend himself against the charges against him during the trial.”

On Tuesday, Germany summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires over Sharmahd’s execution.
