Nuclear discussions between Iran and teh United States concluded Sunday in oman, failing to yield a important breakthrough regarding uranium enrichment. However, both sides affirmed their intent to continue negotiations in the near future.
This round marked the fourth series of talks held over the past month, representing the highest level of engagement between the two nations since the U.S. withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement under then-President Donald Trump.
Differing Perspectives on Progress
While previous rounds were described as showing progress, assessments of Sunday’s meeting varied. Iran characterized the discussions as “difficult but useful,” while a senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated Washington was “encouraged.”
The U.S. official added that they “expect our next meeting, which will take place in the near future,” but did not provide a specific date.
Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, indicated in a post on X that “the next round will be coordinated and announced by Oman.” Omani officials stated that the talks would resume after both parties consult with their respective leadership.
Details of the Discussions
According to the U.S. official, Sunday’s talks, which included both direct and indirect exchanges, lasted over three hours. “An agreement was reached to advance” and “continue working on technical elements,” the official said.
Prior to the meeting, Baqaei stated that Iranian negotiators would press for the lifting of U.S. sanctions.
Sticking Points Remain
Iran has maintained that its right to uranium enrichment is “non-negotiable,” a position reiterated by Iranian officials. Conversely, Steve Witkoff, the chief U.S. negotiator, has described the issue as a “red line” for Washington.

Following the talks, Abbas Araghchi, head of the Iranian delegation, reaffirmed Iran’s stance on enrichment, stating that “it must continue and there is no place for commitments in this regard.”
Araghchi noted that the latest meeting was “more serious” than previous sessions and suggested to Iranian state television that tehran might be open to limiting the enrichment rate “to help generate trust.”
Regional Diplomatic Activity
These discussions occur amidst heightened diplomatic activity in the region. Araghchi recently visited Saudi Arabia and Qatar, stops that mirror part of a tour then-President Trump was planning.
The Iranian diplomat also planned a visit to the United arab Emirates on Monday for talks with senior officials, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Omani Perspective
Oman’s Foreign minister, Badr Albusaidi, described Sunday’s conversations as including “useful and original ideas that reflect a shared desire to achieve an honorable agreement.”
Yousuf Al Bulushi, president of the Muscat Policy Council’s group of experts, said that progress “will take a long time, but I am optimistic.” he cautioned against both parties focusing on clarifying public statements rather of concentrating solely on the negotiations.
Background on Uranium Enrichment
Western nations, including the U.S., have long accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, a claim Tehran denies, asserting its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
Currently, Iran enriches uranium at 60% purity, considerably above the 3.67% limit set by the 2015 agreement but below the 90% needed for weapons-grade material.
Witkoff stated that ”Uranium enrichment facilities of Iran have to be dismantled,” calling it a “red line.”
araghchi has consistently defended Iran’s right to enrich uranium.
