Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council has recovered 375 kilograms of gold and millions of dollars in cash and assets connected to a high-profile anti-corruption case involving a former deputy oil minister, according to an announcement on July 13, 2026. The sweeping crackdown, spearheaded by Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi since he took office in May 2026, targets state resource abuse and illicitly acquired assets across multiple government sectors.

Adnan Al Jumaili Investigation Yields Millions in Cash and Gold

The asset seizures stem from an ongoing investigation into Adnan Al Jumaili, the former Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs. Al Jumaili was detained in May 2026 and officially dismissed from his post on June 2, 2026, following inquiries into activities dating back to October 2025. According to judicial authorities, the investigation focuses on allegations that the former official exploited state resources and government contracts to secure kickbacks and personal gain.

Judge Dhia Jafar of Iraq’s Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court stated that 358 kilograms of the precious metal were recovered through an operation involving Kurdistan regional authorities, operating under the supervision of Supreme Judicial Council President Faiq Zidan. An additional 17 kilograms of gold were seized in a separate, undisclosed investigation on the same day. All recovered gold has been transferred to the Central Bank of Iraq’s Issue and Treasury Department.

The gold recoveries build upon an earlier operation on July 9, 2026, when investigators discovered 14 billion Iraqi dinars, equivalent to roughly $10.6 million, hidden inside a rainwater drainage pit. Iraqi government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi told Al Jazeera that total funds tracked in the al-Jumaili case exceed 127 billion Iraqi dinars ($96 million), alongside an additional $24 million in foreign currency, real estate holdings, vehicles, and gold jewellery.

Operation Dawn Expands Across Government Sectors

The ongoing asset recoveries fall under a broader governmental initiative known as “Operation Dawn,” which aims to track and repatriate missing or misappropriated state funds. CBS News reported that the broader anti-corruption sweep has led to the arrest of at least 21 individuals, including current and former members of parliament whose political immunity has been lifted for prosecution.

Government spokesman al-Aboudi emphasized that the campaign operates under strict judicial guidelines, noting that authorities do not consider the official titles of suspects when pursuing corruption allegations.
