Iraq Reaffirms Commitment to Syrian Sovereignty Amidst Reports of Regime Change
Baghdad,Iraq – As reports emerge of a potential shift in power in syria,Iraq has reiterated its commitment to the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Iraqi government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the Syrian people, stating, “Iraq emphasizes the need to respect the free will of all Syrians and stresses that maintaining Syria’s security, territorial integrity and independence is crucial, not only for iraq, but also for the security and stability of the region.”
Al-awadi further stressed the need for non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs.
These statements come amidst reports of Syrian armed groups entering Damascus and the alleged flight of the Assad government to an undisclosed location.
Meanwhile,the Iraqi army has assured its citizens that the situation along the Iraqi-Syrian border remains secure. Iraqi Border Force Commander Khairallah Issa highlighted the robust security measures in place, stating, “We are assuring leaders and citizens that the situation on the Syrian border is fully secure and we have four barriers: trenches, earthen mounds, a hedgehog wire barrier, and a cement wall 3 meters high.”
