Ireland AM’s Muireann O’Connell Grills TD Paschal Donohoe on Breaking Rules: Heated On-Air Exchange
Muireann O’Connell Confronts Paschal Donohoe on Ireland AM
Muireann O’Connell, a host on Ireland AM, challenged TD Paschal Donohoe about his spending rules on air. Donohoe, the Minister for Public Expenditure, appeared on the show to discuss the upcoming General Election.
During the interview, Muireann expressed concern that the government was breaking its own rule on public spending, which allows for a maximum annual increase of 5%. She noted that the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (IFAC) had warned the government that its budget plans would increase spending by 7%.
Muireann stated, “You’ve broken that spending rule every year. This is not how to run a budget.” She emphasized that the continuous breaches undermined effective financial governance.
Donohoe defended his actions by explaining the necessity of flexibility during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. He argued that adhering strictly to the spending limit would have worsened economic conditions and hampered recovery efforts. “If I had stuck with it, we wouldn’t have been able to help with the pandemic,” he said.
The discussion then shifted to the housing crisis in Ireland. Tommy Bowe, another host, questioned Donohoe about the rising number of adults living with their parents, citing that over half a million face this situation.
Donohoe confirmed he has been in government since 2011 and acknowledged that housing is a critical issue. However, he defended the government’s track record, stating they increased the number of homes built from 7,000 when they began to over 22,000 at present. He claimed that over 50,000 homes are currently under construction, projecting the need for 300,000 additional homes by 2030.
Tommy argued that significant gaps in housing construction existed, but Donohoe disagreed, insisting they made tangible progress despite previous economic crises.
This exchange highlighted ongoing frustrations over public spending and housing, providing viewers with an insightful look into government challenges ahead of the election.
