We knew we’d finish a distant second in the singing of the so-called anthem on Thursday night, but in terms of what was to follow, we were underdogs yes but surely the ‘fighting Irish in Paris’ weren’t without hope? How wrong was that assessment!

What we got was as flat and insipid an Irish performance as anything we’ve witnessed in recent times. And I include the poor autumn displays against New Zealand and South Africa in that judgment. Even allowing for a mid-second-half comeback of sorts this was a truly dreadful Irish collective performance.

French Dominance From the Start

France delivered a ruthless opening-half performance, taking firm control of their Six Nations opener against Ireland at the Stade de France on February 5th, 2026. Racing into a commanding 22-0 lead by the interval, the reigning champions showcased a combination of clinical finishing, flair, and physical dominance that Ireland simply couldn’t match. The final score of 36-14 hardly tells the full story of the one-sided contest.

The early stages hinted at a competitive match, with Jamie Osborne’s long-range kick earning Ireland a 50:22. However, the visitors immediately squandered the opportunity with a knock-on, setting the tone for a frustrating evening. France capitalized decisively, with Louis Bielle-Biarrey opening the scoring in the 13th minute. The winger collected possession near halfway, accelerated down the left touchline, and finished with speed, leaving the Irish defense trailing. Thomas Ramos added the conversion, making it 7-0.

The pressure continued to mount on Ireland, and another infringement inside their own 22 allowed Ramos to extend the lead with a penalty, stretching the advantage to 15 points. A five-metre scrum, awarded after sustained French possession, led to Matthieu Jalibert exploiting space close to the line to score France’s second try. While Ramos missed the conversion, France were firmly in control.

Ireland Struggles in Key Areas

Ireland’s defensive workload intensified as the half wore on, and their kicking game proved particularly ineffective. According to analysis from John O’Sullivan, Ireland’s “plan was shredded almost from the get-go.” Possession was wasted, and the aerial battle was lost, with France sharper and more attuned in their tap backs. The conditions – rain and a wet ball – certainly played a factor, but France adapted far better, gobbling up the aerial scraps and gaining a significant advantage.

Captain Caelan Doris acknowledged the team’s shortcomings after the match, stating, “Not how we hoped or foresaw it going. Lacking a bit of bite in the first half. Some class from them, but not good enough from us. Not good enough in the collision, kick chase not good enough.” His assessment highlighted the areas where Ireland were comprehensively outplayed.

The second half saw a slight improvement from Ireland, with replacements Nick Timoney and Michael Milne providing some impact, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide. France continued to dominate, adding further tries to their tally and maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the match. Louis Bielle-Biarrey added a second try to his name, securing a bonus point for the French.

Farrell Disappointed with Intent

Head coach Andy Farrell echoed Doris’s sentiments, expressing his disappointment with Ireland’s lack of intent. “Not good enough ” he stated, as reported by Irish Rugby. The defeat leaves Ireland with plenty to reflect on as they prepare for their next Six Nations fixture.

The contrast between the two teams was stark. France’s physicality and precision were evident in every aspect of their game, while Ireland struggled to gain any sustained foothold. The Irish kicking game, in particular, proved to be a major weakness, handing France valuable territory and opportunities. The aerial battle, as O’Sullivan pointed out, was decisively won by the French, further compounding Ireland’s problems.

Looking Ahead

This defeat is a significant setback for Ireland, particularly after the high expectations surrounding their Six Nations campaign. The performance raises questions about their preparation, strategy, and ability to compete with the top teams in Europe. While the team showed glimpses of improvement in the second half, it wasn’t enough to salvage the match.

France, have sent a clear message to their rivals: they are a force to be reckoned with. Their dominant display against Ireland sets an early marker in the 2026 Championship and establishes them as strong contenders for the title. The “free-scoring Bleus,” as the BBC described them, have demonstrated their ability to deliver a polished and powerful performance, combining clinical finishing with physical dominance.

Ireland will need to address their shortcomings quickly if they are to recover from this disappointing start to the Six Nations. A significant improvement in their kicking game, defensive intensity, and overall physicality will be crucial if they are to compete with the best teams in the tournament. The Irish fans, understandably, were left raging at the performance, and particularly at the officiating of Angus Gardner, but the reality is that Ireland were simply outplayed by a superior French side.
