Ireland, Luxembourg Settle for Draw; O’Leary debuts
Updated June 10, 2025
The republic of Ireland concluded their season with a lackluster 0-0 draw against Luxembourg on Tuesday. The match, played at Stade de Luxembourg, saw goalkeeper Max O’Leary make his international debut for Ireland.
O’Leary, who plays for Bristol City, earned his first cap after being called up six years prior. He made crucial saves, denying Danel Sinani and Vincent Thill, preventing a repeat of Ireland’s 2021 defeat to Luxembourg.
Despite the debut and O’Leary’s solid performance, the irish squad struggled to find their rhythm against Luxembourg, currently ranked 91st globally. Both sides hit the woodwork, but neither could break the deadlock in a match marked by “end-of-term” vibes.
Luxembourg created more opportunities in the first half. Sinani forced O’Leary into a full-stretch save. just before halftime, Nathan Collins headed a free-kick that bounced off the crossbar, denying Ireland the lead.

Kasey McAteer injected some energy into Ireland’s attack early in the second half, but Jason Knight’s block prevented Laurent Jans from putting Luxembourg ahead. A shot from McAteer went wide. Later, a cross from Ryan Manning found Parrott, who couldn’t convert. O’Leary then saved from Aiman Dardari.
Parrott had a goal disallowed for offside in the 65th minute.

One off the post in the first-half by Collins and another chance off side in the second, this time from parrott. A great finish but flag goes straight up for an obvious early run.
