Private Supply Shortages Impact Workplace Clinics
Companies organizing on-site flu vaccination programs for employees are being informed that private market doses may not arrive this year. Donegal-based pharmacist Tom Murray told RTÉ’s This Week that while the public rollout for at-risk populations is proceeding on schedule, a lack of clarity surrounds private delivery dates.

Murray noted that public supplies handled by GPs and pharmacies are secure and deliveries are already arriving. However, the private market squeeze means many corporate wellness initiatives that typically administer shots directly to workers in autumn are being called off.
Manufacturing Shifts Drive the Vaccine Delay
The supply tightness stems from a manufacturing hurdle at the production level. According to Murray, this season marks the first time in many years that all three strains contained in the influenza vaccine have had to be changed simultaneously based on recommendations from the World Health Organization.
Typically, vaccine makers find it much simpler to update just a single strain from one year to the next.

Viatris, one of the two companies contracted to supply winter flu vaccines to Ireland, confirmed the disruption in a statement to RTÉ’s This Week. The firm stated that its third-party manufacturer, Abbot, experienced impacts from the simultaneous update of all three influenza virus strains for the 2026-2027 season, alongside delays in critical materials required for manufacturing and strain standardization.

While workplace programs face interruptions, the HSE’s main influenza vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin on 8 October. Public supplies are fully reserved to protect individuals at increased risk of severe illness.
The vaccine is officially recommended for several key groups:
- People aged 60 years and older
- Pregnant women
- People with certain underlying medical conditions
- Healthcare workers and carers
- Children aged 2 to 17 years old, who are eligible for a free nasal flu vaccine
