The EIRSAT-1 Mission: A National First

EIRSAT-1, a 1U CubeSat developed by UCD students and researchers, represented Ireland’s first foray into space-based research. Launched on December 14, 2023, as part of a rideshare mission with SpaceX SpaceX,the satellite aimed to demonstrate the capabilities of Irish space technology and provide valuable experience for the next generation of space engineers.

The project, supported by Enterprise Ireland and the European Space Agency (ESA), focused on three primary payloads: the Irish Microwave Sensor (IMS), the Enhanced Color Filter Assembly (ECFA), and the Magnetometer.

Key Achievements of EIRSAT-1

While details of the mission’s full data analysis are still emerging, EIRSAT-1 successfully completed a series of initial tests and data collection phases. The Irish Microwave Sensor (IMS) aimed to measure the Earth’s thermal emissions, providing data relevant to climate monitoring and environmental studies.UCD News reported successful initial signal acquisition and telemetry data from the satellite shortly after launch.

The Enhanced Colour Filter Assembly (ECFA) was designed to capture high-resolution images of Earth, while the Magnetometer measured the Earth’s magnetic field. These payloads provided valuable data for calibration and validation purposes, contributing to the broader understanding of Earth’s systems.

Impact on Irish Space Research and education

Beyond the scientific data collected, EIRSAT-1 served as a crucial educational platform. The project involved over 70 undergraduate and postgraduate students at UCD, providing them with hands-on experience in all aspects of satellite advancement, testing, and operations.
