An 84-year-old patient admitted for cardiac and hypertension treatment underwent emergency brain surgery following a hospital fall, prompting an official police complaint and a formal grievance from her family over alleged medical negligence. Irène Manon remains hospitalized while health authorities have been informed of the incident at Victoria Hospital in Candos.
Police Complaint Filed Over Victoria Hospital Fall
The family’s formal complaint centers on a fall from a hospital bed that allegedly triggered the need for neurosurgical intervention. The daughter filed the police report on Thursday, October 22, contending that the physical trauma and subsequent brain operation could have been avoided with proper supervision.
In addition to the police report, a written grievance was submitted to the superintendent’s office at Victoria Hospital. The Ministry of Health and Wellness was also informed of the case.
Timeline of Admissions and Medical Interventions
Irène Manon, a resident of Camp-Levieux, was admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit, designated as ICU-1, on Tuesday, October 6, for hypertension and heart-related complications. Two days later, during a hospital visit on Thursday, October 8, at approximately 6:00 a.m., nursing staff informed her daughter that the patient had fallen from her bed around 1:00 a.m., sustaining injuries to her head and eyebrow.
Following the fall, hospital staff transferred the patient to the neurology department to treat her head trauma. By Sunday, October 11, at 7:50 p.m., medical staff moved her to the High Dependency Unit for closer observation as her condition required heightened monitoring.
On Monday, October 12, the family met with a neurosurgeon who outlined the risks of operating on a patient of advanced age. According to the plaintiff, the specialist initially advised that cranial surgery was not appropriate given the circumstances.
The medical assessment shifted on Monday, October 19, at 5:20 p.m., when the hospital contacted the daughter and instructed her to return immediately to sign a consent form for urgent brain surgery. Surgeons performed the operation, and Manon was returned to the High Dependency Unit to recover.
Infection Concerns Following Brain Surgery
Medical specialists informed the family after the operation that Manon had developed a severe chest infection, which is now considered more concerning than the brain issue. The daughter maintains that the fall in the establishment is the origin of the complications that necessitated the surgery and has alleged negligence on the part of the cardiac intensive care unit staff.
