Barry McGann: A Versatile star

Barry McGann, a Cork native, passed away ⁤on Saturday, November ​9, 2025, at the age of 77.⁤ He earned 25 caps for Ireland between 1969 and 1976, accumulating 92 points throughout ⁤his international career.

McGann’s rugby journey included representing Presentation Brothers Collage Cork, Cork Constitution, ‍and Lansdowne, alongside his provincial portrayal for Munster. His ​contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Munster⁣ Hall of Fame in 2017.

Notably, McGann was also ⁣a talented soccer player, representing Ireland at the 1965 UEFA European ​Under-18 ⁣Championship and playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland, demonstrating his athletic versatility.

Mick Lane: A Lion and Championship Winner

Mick Lane, also from Cork, ⁢died peacefully at his home in Cork City on Sunday, November 10, 2025, at ⁢the remarkable age of 99. He was Ireland’s oldest surviving Lion at the time of his passing.

Lane won 17 caps for Ireland as a wing, playing a key ​role in the⁤ team’s success during the ‍1949 season, which ‍saw‌ them secure both⁢ a Triple Crown and a championship title. He further distinguished himself with two ‍appearances⁣ for the British‌ & Irish Lions during their 1950 tour of australia and New Zealand, participating in 11 games, including test matches against both host nations.

Lane⁤ scored one try for Ireland during a 12-8 Five Nations victory over‍ Scotland in 1952, responding to an early try scored by James Davidson for the visitors.

The Irish Rugby‌ Football Union (IRFU) ⁣has extended its condolences to‌ the families and friends of both McGann ⁢and Lane, recognizing their meaningful contributions to Irish rugby.
