Irish Drivers Hit with Fuel Price Hikes: Petrol and Diesel Costs Rise This Month
Increase in Fuel Prices in Ireland
Irish drivers face higher petrol and diesel prices this month. Petrol is now €1.73 per litre, up by 2 cents, and diesel is €1.67 per litre, up by 1 cent. These changes are reported by AA Ireland.
Despite the rise in fuel prices, crude oil prices decreased slightly to around $72 per barrel. Electric vehicle (EV) owners will pay an average of €808.64 per year for charging, based on a typical distance of 17,000 km.
The Head of Marketing and PR for AA Ireland welcomed recent reductions from Electric Ireland that took effect on November 1. This is positive news for EV drivers. She encouraged drivers to compare energy provider rates, utilize home charging, and take advantage of night rates to lower costs.
For petrol and diesel drivers, the AA recommends shopping around at various retailers for better prices. The AA also offers discounts for customers using their app at specific Circle K garages. These discounts include a deduction of 3 cents per litre on petrol and diesel, and a 6-cent reduction on miles plus fuel.
To improve fuel efficiency, the AA advises motorists to maintain their vehicles properly and to drive less during the winter.
Road Law Change
A significant new law affecting road safety will take effect on March 31, 2025. Transport Minister Eamon Ryan signed orders that grant gardai the ability to check driver’s licence numbers alongside insurance details on the roadside.
Currently, gardai can access the Irish Motor Insurance Database to identify uninsured drivers. The new law enhances their ability to enforce compliance by providing access to driver’s licence data through their mobility devices.
Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman highlighted that this new feature will strengthen road safety efforts. She expressed confidence that improved technology and data sharing among agencies will help keep Irish roads safer.
