Irish Gaza Flotilla Activists Allege Mistreatment
Irish activists who participated in a Gaza aid flotilla have detailed experiences of mistreatment, including torture and strip searches, following their interception and detention by Israeli forces. Dr. Margaret Connolly, one of the participants, described the transition from a humanitarian effort to a period of detention. She recalled that a mission she characterized as one of pure goodness concluded with the use of manacles and the performance of strip searches while in Israeli detention. Additional accounts of abuse have emerged from other members of the flotilla. Colm Byrne, a man from Wexford, spoke regarding his time in the custody of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
We were tortured
Colm Byrne The treatment of the activists has drawn international criticism. Mark Carney of Canada described the handling of the Gaza flotilla activists as appalling. Controversy Over Official Conduct The detention of the activists has been further complicated by the actions of an Israeli minister. A video was released in which the minister is seen taunting activists who were handcuffed, a move that has sparked widespread fury. The reports from the Irish participants and the subsequent international reactions highlight the contentious nature of the flotilla’s interception and the conditions under which the activists were held by the IDF.
