DUBLIN – A ⁢Lebanese military tribunal ⁤has delivered its verdict in⁣ the⁢ case of Private seán Rooney, an‍ Irish Defense Forces soldier killed in Lebanon in December 2022. While a primary defendant was convicted, the sentences handed down ‍have drawn criticism from Irish officials for ‍being too lenient and for ⁣the continued absence of the main perpetrator.

Key Convictions and Sentences

The tribunal fined one defendant 100 ‍million Lebanese pounds (€960).Another individual ‍received a three-month prison sentence and the same fine, ‍while a ⁢third was ⁤sentenced to one month in prison ⁣with the same financial penalty. Three other defendants were each fined‍ 200 million Lebanese pounds. One defendant was acquitted of all charges.

Irish government Response

taoiseach Micheál Martin,⁢ who has previously stated the irish government’s belief ‍that the Hezbollah militia bore primary responsibility for Pte Rooney’s death, welcomed ⁣the conviction ‍of the main defendant. However, he expressed dissatisfaction that the individual remains at large and ⁤voiced concerns that the sentences for the other defendants ⁤were “far too lenient.”

“Peacekeeping⁢ is ‍the most noble cause of all, and the role⁣ of the peacekeeper must at all times be honoured ⁤and ⁤respected,” Mr Martin stated. “This is a very difficult day for the family of Seán Rooney, in particular⁢ his mother Natasha. Seán was a soldier of great⁣ courage who put⁣ the safety of others before his own safety in the line of duty.⁤ He ‍was brave and diligent.” He extended his‍ thoughts and prayers to Pte Rooney’s mother, family, friends, ⁣and colleagues.

Minister for Defence Simon Harris echoed the Taoiseach’s sentiments, welcoming the conviction of the main defendant and several others who had ⁤not previously appeared in ⁤court. “While noting the sentence handed down to the main defendant, ⁣I‍ am disappointed and share the disappointment of ‍Pte⁤ Rooney’s family at‍ the lighter sentences imposed ⁤on a number of those ‍convicted today,” Mr Harris said.‍ He emphasized that Pte Rooney had made the “ultimate⁣ sacrifice in the noble⁣ pursuit of peace.”

Mr Harris also acknowledged the efforts of various officials and individuals who attended the⁢ hearing, including Ireland’s Ambassador to Lebanon, members of the Defence Forces, Ireland’s honorary Consul to⁤ Lebanon, and the⁤ Department’s ‍Lebanese lawyer, alongside a member of pte Rooney’s family.

Context of the Incident

Private Seán rooney, a member of ‍the 121st Infantry Battalion of the United Nations Interim⁣ force ‍in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was ⁣killed when his armoured vehicle was attacked near ‍the village of Aqbiya in southern⁣ Lebanon. The incident also resulted in injuries to other members of his unit. ⁣The delay in progressing the case was described as “deeply regrettable” by the Taoiseach.

Tribunal President’s Remarks

According to Lebanese reports, the tribunal’s president, ‍Brigadier General Wassim Fayyad, commented on the importance of peacekeeping ⁣forces in Lebanon, stating, “Hearts beat for the continued presence of the peacekeeping ⁢forces in Lebanon,⁤ given the humanitarian, social, and even cultural work they are⁣ doing.”
