Table of Contents

Stargazers in Ireland are in for a treat this weekend! On Sunday night, starting around 9 PM, Jupiter will appear incredibly close to the Moon, creating a stunning visual spectacle. The two brightest objects in the night sky will look “on top of each other.”
David Moore, editor of Astronomy Ireland magazine, calls this “one of the most spectacular events visible to the general public during 2025” and a perfect way to end the year. While it’s a line-of-sight effect – Jupiter is approximately 1,600 times farther away than the Moon – the alignment will create the illusion of them nearly touching.
Moore encourages everyone to add this event to their “bucket list,” emphasizing the rarity and beauty of seeing the two brightest celestial bodies so close together.
