Irish Swimmers Shine at European Aquatics U23 Championships

Irish swimmers are making waves at both the European Aquatics U23 Championships in Slovakia and the Sette Colli International in Rome. Ellie McCartney, Evan Bailey, Mona McSharry, and tom Fannon have all secured spots in their respective finals, showcasing Ireland’s strength in the sport of swimming.
At the European Aquatics U23 Championships in Slovakia, Ellie McCartney delivered a stellar performance in the 200m individual medley.Her time of 2:15.02 earned her the top qualifying spot for the final, scheduled for 6:27 p.m. (Irish time). she will swim in Lane 4. Bertille Cousson of France (2:15.25) and Italy’s Giada Alzetta (2:15.74) will also compete for the gold.
Evan Bailey also impressed in Slovakia, finishing his 200m freestyle heat behind Olympic champion david Popovici. Bailey’s time of 1:47.48 secured him fourth place overall and a spot in the final at 5:24 p.m. (Irish time).
Eoin Corby narrowly missed a place in the 50m breaststroke final after a swim-off with Maksym Ovchinnikov of Ukraine. Both swimmers initially clocked 28.00, but Ovchinnikov edged Corby 27.99 to 28.14 in the deciding race. Corby had previously competed in the mixed medley relay.
Other Irish swimmers competing in Slovakia included Brandon Biss (200m backstroke, 2:03.36), Cormac Rynn (200m freestyle, 1:47.77), Maria Godden (50m backstroke, 29.39), and Jack Cassin (100m butterfly, 53.05). The mixed medley relay team, consisting of Cullen, Cassin, Corby, and Godden, finished 11th in 3:55.47.
Meanwhile, at the Sette Colli International in Rome, Olympic bronze medalist Mona McSharry qualified for the 100m breaststroke final with a time of 1:07.05. She finished second overall behind Great Britain’s Angharad Evans (1:06.83).The final is set for 6:04 p.m. (Irish time).
Tom Fannon also advanced to the 50m freestyle final in Rome, clocking 22.21 in his heat. He qualified fourth behind Ben proud of Great Britain (21.90). The final will take place at 6:44 p.m. (irish time).
Ellen Walshe began the Irish campaign in rome, finishing the 200m freestyle in 2:01.52. She is scheduled to compete in her main event, the 400m individual medley, on Friday.
