Irish Times Reign: Prizes and Duties of the May Queen
Beyond the Crown: A Look at the Real Rewards of Being the Rose of tralee
The Allure of the Rose: More Than Just a Title
The Rose of Tralee International Festival is steeped in tradition, but the rewards for the winning Rose extend far beyond the glittering stage and the iconic crown. While the prestige is undeniable, the practical benefits – and the opportunities they unlock – are substantial. as the 2025 competition nears its conclusion, a closer look reveals a prize package designed to empower the winner to become a true ambassador for irish culture and community.
A World of Opportunity: The €25,000 Travel Bursary
The centerpiece of the prize package is undoubtedly the €25,000 travel bursary. This isn’t simply a fund for personal vacations; it’s an investment in the Rose’s ability to represent the festival and connect with the global Irish diaspora. Organizers envision the winner using these funds to foster relationships and build bridges within Irish communities worldwide.
Past Roses have demonstrated the diverse impact of this bursary. In 2024, Keely O’Grady leveraged the funds to attend St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Chicago, support the New Zealand Irish Dance Championships in Wellington, and volunteer at the Happy Kids Foundation orphanage in Poland. Róisín Wiley, the 2023 New York rose, used her bursary to attend the National Ploughing Championship. The possibilities are vast, reflecting the individual passions and priorities of each Rose.
Perhaps the most enterprising example comes from Maria Walsh, the 2014 Rose of Tralee, who later became a Member of the European Parliament. She balanced a demanding work schedule in Philadelphia with weekly returns to Ireland for five months, and even had the honor of meeting former US President barack Obama at the White House during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in 2015.This demonstrates the potential for the role to open doors to significant opportunities.
Beyond Travel: A Suite of supporting Prizes
The travel bursary is complemented by a range of prizes designed to support the Rose throughout her year-long reign. this includes the use of a new Kia Niro plug-in hybrid SUV (valued at over €40,000), though it must be returned after 12 months. An all-expenses-paid week-long trip around County Kerry, including visits to Killarney and Dingle, provides a chance to experience the beauty of Ireland firsthand.
Practical support is also provided through complimentary accommodation at the Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee whenever the Rose returns to the town during her reign. Local business Brush ‘N’ Blush will also provide complimentary hair and beauty styling for the Rose throughout the year, ensuring she always looks her best during public appearances.
The Escort Experience: A Rewarding, Though Less Lavish, Role
While the Rose receives a substantial prize package, the role of the Escort is also valued - though the financial reward is considerably smaller. The Escort of the Year receives a €1,000 cash prize, which barely covers the €2,000 submission fee. However, as Andy Rodgers, the 2025 Escort of the Year, attests, the experience is about more than money.
Rodgers emphasized the value of “making connections and meeting new people,” and shared that his motivation for applying was to demonstrate to his 10-year-old daughter, Sophia, the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone. He acknowledged the hard work involved, particularly the long days dedicated to supporting the Roses, but ultimately found the experience “amazing.” He highlighted the importance of ensuring the Rose feels supported and enjoys her experience, stating, “It’s about her making memories.”
