Iron Maiden’s Janick Gers Falls on Stage: Controversy Over His Performance Style
Janick Gers’ Stage Fall at Iron Maiden Concert
Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers lost his balance and fell during the band’s concert on November 20 at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City. Fans recorded the incident, which can be viewed online.
This is not the first time Gers faced mishaps on stage. In September 2019, during a performance in San Antonio, Texas, he accidentally let go of his guitar. It flew off and struck a security guard in the back.
Gers often receives criticism for his energetic stage presence, which some fans believe clashes with Iron Maiden’s traditional style. In a 2009 blog, radio personality Eddie Trunk commented on Gers’ performance. He expressed confusion over why the band allows Gers to perform in such a flashy manner, likening it to an audition for a dance show. Trunk acknowledged Gers’ talent but felt his style seemed inappropriate for Iron Maiden.
In response to the criticism, Adrian Smith, another Iron Maiden guitarist, defended Gers. He stated that different performance styles within the band create interest. Smith emphasized the discipline required to play Iron Maiden’s complex songs. He noted that while he stays focused, Gers thrives on his dynamic approach.
Gers has a varied music background. He was the lead guitarist for White Spirit before joining Gillan, the band formed by former Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan. Later, he played with Gogmagog, which included ex-Iron Maiden members. In 1990, Gers contributed guitar work for Bruce Dickinson’s debut solo album, “Tattooed Millionaire.” He subsequently joined Iron Maiden when Adrian Smith left. Gers has remained with the band even after Smith’s return in 1999.
