Irony Strikes: Top Crime Prevention Official Falls Victim to Theft in Bizarre Incident
UK Crime Prevention Official Loses Wallet While Discussing Theft
On 12 September, media reports revealed that during Diana Johnson’s speech at the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Annual Conference in Warwickshire, police received a report that Johnson’s wallet had been stolen from the hotel where the conference was being held.
The incident occurred as Johnson was speaking about towns and cities affected by anti-social conditions and theft, and she stressed that her government “want to restore respect for Britain’s road laws, including restoring respect for the police, which has sadly been eroded over the years”.
Warwickshire Police are investigating the theft and have arrested a man on suspicion of theft who has since been released on bail, while the Home Office confirmed that Johnson’s wallet had been stolen.
Writing on social network X after the meeting, Ms Johnson said she was happy to speak to police but did not mention the robbery. “We have a mission to tackle serious crime and anti-social behaviour and reinstate neighbourhood policing, and what I have seen in my short time in this role has given me even more confidence that we will be successful,” she wrote.
Johnson’s Labour party has pledged to crack down on crime, including by recruiting 3,000 new police officers and 4,000 new community support officers. But the government has been criticised for releasing 1,700 prisoners earlier than planned, with the Ministry of Justice saying it was aimed at relieving prison overcrowding.
