Deadly Attack in DRC: Islamic State Affiliate Claims Dozens of Lives in North-Eastern Province

Dozens of people have been killed in a brutal attack by an Islamic State affiliate in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials have confirmed. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), now operating as part of the Islamic State’s Central African Province, targeted a church in the town of Komanda, leaving a trail of destruction and loss.
Church vigil Shattered by ADF Violence
The horrific incident occurred during a night vigil at a church in komanda, where approximately 20 worshippers were among the victims. ADF fighters launched a savage assault, resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians. The violence extended beyond the church, with nearby shops and businesses being looted and set ablaze, underscoring the widespread devastation caused by the attack.
Dieudonne Duranthabo,a civil society coordinator in Komanda,spoke to the Associated Press,indicating that the grim revelation of more bodies is possible as the search continues. “More than 21 people were shot dead inside and outside [the church] and we have recorded at least three charred bodies and several houses burned. But the search is continuing,” Duranthabo stated.
Father Aime Lokana Dhego, a local priest, provided further harrowing details to the AFP news agency.He reported at least 31 deaths among members of the Eucharistic Crusade movement, with six individuals sustaining serious injuries. Disturbingly, some young people were also kidnapped during the attack, and their whereabouts remain unknown.Father Dhego also confirmed the discovery of seven additional bodies elsewhere in the town.
The UN-sponsored Radio Okapi website has reported a higher death toll,placing the number of deceased at 43. In contrast, a spokesperson for the army confirmed 10 deaths. These varying figures highlight the chaotic nature of the aftermath and the ongoing efforts to ascertain the full extent of the tragedy.
The ADF: A Persistent Threat in the DRC
The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) frist emerged in Uganda in the 1990s, initially citing accusations of government persecution of Muslims. However, the group has since relocated its base across the border into the Democratic Republic of Congo. From its new stronghold, the ADF has become a persistent threat, regularly attacking civilians nonetheless of their religious affiliation, both within the DRC and in Uganda.
In recent years, the ADF has solidified its ties with global extremist networks, becoming an integral part of the Islamic State’s Central African Province. This affiliation also encompasses a group operating in Mozambique. Research by BBC Monitoring indicates a significant shift in Islamic State operations, with nearly 90% of its activities now being carried out by affiliates in Africa, underscoring the growing prominence of these groups on the continent.
Ituri Province: A Region Plagued by Conflict
Komanda is situated in the mineral-rich Ituri province of the DRC, a region that has endured years of conflict and competition among various armed groups. The persistent instability in Ituri has created a fertile ground for extremist organizations like the ADF to operate and exert influence.In an effort to combat the escalating violence, the DRC government invited Ugandan troops into the country in 2021 to assist in tackling the ADF.Despite these collaborative efforts, attacks by the group have unluckily continued, demonstrating the formidable challenge of eradicating such deeply entrenched insurgencies.
