Yazidi Survivor Rebuilds Life in Berlin, Advocates for Community
Sipan Ajo, a Yazidi survivor of the 2014 genocide perpetrated by ISIS, now resides in Berlin, Germany, where he studies and works with the Farida Association. The Farida Organization, founded by fellow yazidi survivors, provides support and advocates for the rights of the Yazidi community. Ajo also supports his surviving younger siblings, carrying the weight of immense loss after the deaths of his father, brother, uncles, and cousins.
The Yazidi community faced systematic persecution and violence at the hands of ISIS beginning in August 2014, when the group seized control of large swathes of northern Iraq.Thousands of Yazidis were killed, and an estimated 6,417 remain missing, according to a united Nations report released in December 2023. Ajo’s story reflects the ongoing trauma and resilience of the Yazidi people. The Farida Organization plays a crucial role in providing psychological support,legal assistance,and advocacy for accountability for the crimes committed against the Yazidi community.
