Islamic State Claims Obligation for Niamey Airport Attack
Islamic State in the Sahel claimed responsibility for an attack at the international airport and adjacent air force base in Niamey, Niger, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist activity. The assault began shortly after midnight on Thursday.
The group stated the attack involved militants on motorcycles launching a “surprise and coordinated” strike using heavy weaponry and drones, as reported by its propaganda arm, Amaq news agency. Gunfire and blasts were heard at the airport during the attack.
Islamic State in the Sahel has been linked to several high-profile attacks in Niger in recent months.In September, strikes targeting the Tillabéri region killed more than 120 people. in october, the group abducted an American pilot. Niger has struggled with increasing jihadist activity.
