Recent Attacks and Foiled Plots
Christmas markets in Europe have increasingly become targets for terrorist attacks in recent years. On December 12, 2025, German authorities arrested five men suspected of planning an attack on a Christmas market in Germany, marking at least the eighth such plot thwarted in the country. This incident highlights the ongoing threat during the holiday season.
The Theological Motivation
Robert Spencer, an expert on Islam, explains that jihadists target Christmas markets due to their theological objections to Christianity. While the Quran acknowledges the virgin birth of Jesus, the core issue lies with the Christian belief that jesus is the Son of God.
According to Spencer, this belief constitutes shirk – the worst sin in Islam, wich involves associating partners with Allah. The identification of Jesus as divine is seen as a basic violation of Islamic monotheism. Christmas,as a party of this belief,is therefore viewed as a manifestation of unbelief and a direct affront to Islamic principles.
“They don’t have a problem with the virgin birth, actually. The virgin birth is in the Quran. But nonetheless, they believe that Christmas is not onyl a manifestation of unbelief, but of shirk, which is the worst sin in Islam. It is the association of partners with Allah. That is, you worship Allah, but you also worship various created beings, in this case, Jesus. It is the identification of Jesus as the Son of god that they object to,” Spencer explained.
Security Concerns and Calls for Broader Solutions
The increased threat has led to heightened security measures at Christmas markets across Europe, requiring notable expenditure of public funds. Though, some critics argue that focusing solely on security is insufficient. they contend that European leaders must address the root cause of the threat: the presence of a significant number of potentially violent jihadists within their borders.
This debate raises complex questions about immigration policy, integration strategies, and the balance between security and civil liberties. The challenge lies in effectively countering extremism while upholding fundamental rights and avoiding discriminatory practices.
