Islanders Edge Sharks in Overtime, Extend Overtime Perfection

SAN JOSE, CA – Bo Horvat scored at 4:20 of overtime, lifting the New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday, March 7, 2026, at the SAP Center. The win extends the Islanders’ perfect record in overtime games this season.

The game was a tightly contested battle, with both teams demonstrating resilience and skill throughout. According to reports, the Islanders’ victory comes at a crucial juncture following the NHL trade deadline, providing a boost to their playoff aspirations.

Macklin Celebrini put the Sharks ahead early, scoring in the first period. NHL Highlights noted that Celebrini’s goal ignited the home crowd. The Islanders responded in the second period, tying the game and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

After a scoreless regulation period, Horvat secured the win for the Islanders with a decisive play in overtime. He took a pass from Matthew Schaefer and maneuvered behind the San Jose defense, ultimately sliding the puck past Yaroslav Askarov with a backhand move.

“We had a really good first period. Ilya (Sorokin) made some really good saves,” Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. “That was a big overtime goal by Bo and a great play by Schaefer to give us that breakaway.”

Tony DeAngelo also scored for the Islanders, giving them an initial 1-0 lead at 11:37 of the first period. His wrist shot deflected off Askarov’s glove and into the net. “They are massive points,” DeAngelo said. “Huge for us. Just controlling the puck, we’re not giving up too much. Really good job.”

Celebrini’s goal for the Sharks marked his third consecutive game with a goal. Despite the loss, Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky acknowledged his team’s effort. “Some things we did well and it’s a tough game out there. You gotta fight for ice,” Warsofsky said. “That’s a good team there. They defend really hard. Obviously got us in a back to back as well. So, you know, I thought our guys grinded.”

Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin was instrumental in the victory, making 30 saves to withstand the Sharks’ offensive pressure. Yaroslav Askarov, the Sharks’ goaltender, also had a strong performance, stopping 32 shots.

“I thought we played a solid game all around,” Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau said. “Both goalies were really good. A lot of blocked shots from the guys. A lot of sacrifice. We finished with the extra point, so it was huge.”

The Sharks, currently navigating a challenging season, fall to 30-25-6 with the loss. The Islanders improve to 36-23-5 and continue to push for a playoff spot.
