Israel Accused of Genocide for Denying Water to Gazans
Water Crisis in Gaza: Human Rights Group Accuses Israel of ‘Genocide’
Thousands May Have Died From Dehydration and Disease, Says HRW
(New York, NY) – the human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a scathing indictment of Israel, accusing the nation of “extermination and acts of genocide” for its alleged denial of water access to palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement released Thursday, HRW Executive Director Tirana Hassan declared, “Water is essential for human life, yet for over a year, the Israeli government has deliberately denied Palestinians in Gaza the minimum amount they need to survive.”
The organization estimates that hundreds of thousands of Gazans have contracted waterborne illnesses, including diarrhea, hepatitis A,skin diseases, and upper respiratory infections, due to the lack of clean water.
Babies and Pregnant Women Most Vulnerable
HRW highlights the devastating impact of water deprivation on vulnerable populations. “The denial of water is particularly harmful to infants, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers,” the group emphasized.
the organization points to repeated Israeli attacks on Gaza’s water treatment and sanitation infrastructure as a key factor in the crisis. Most of Gaza’s water comes from a contaminated aquifer, making these treatment plants crucial for providing potable water.
Aid Blockade Exacerbates Crisis
The situation is further compounded by strict Israeli controls on humanitarian aid entering Gaza. Many supplies needed to repair sanitation plants or address sewage buildup are classified as “dual-use” items by Israeli authorities, hindering their delivery.
This latest accusation from HRW adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

NewsDirectory3.com:
Today we are joined by tirana Hassan, Executive Director of human Rights watch, to discuss the escalating water crisis in gaza and the association’s recent accusation of genocide against the Israeli government. Ms. Hassan, thank you for joining us.
Tirana Hassan: Thank you for having me.
NewsDirectory3.com:
HRW has issued a strong statement accusing Israel of “extermination and acts of genocide” regarding its handling of water access in Gaza. Can you elaborate on the evidence supporting this grave accusation?
Tirana Hassan:
For over a year, the Israeli government has deliberately denied palestinians in Gaza the minimum amount of water needed for survival. this is not a natural disaster; this is a man-made catastrophe. We estimate that hundreds of thousands of Gazans have contracted waterborne illnesses, including diarrhea, hepatitis A, skin diseases, and upper respiratory infections, due to the lack of clean water.
NewsDirectory3.com:
Specifically, what actions by Israel are directly contributing to this water crisis?
Tirana Hassan:
Repeated attacks on Gaza’s water treatment and sanitation infrastructure have crippled their ability to provide potable water. Most of Gaza’s water comes from a contaminated aquifer, making these treatment plants absolutely crucial. Furthermore, Israel’s strict control over humanitarian aid entering Gaza prevents essential supplies needed to repair sanitation plants and address sewage buildup from reaching those who desperately need them.
NewsDirectory3.com:
HRW emphasizes the vulnerability of certain groups, such as infants and pregnant women. Can you explain the impact of the water crisis on these populations?
Tirana Hassan:
the denial of water is notably harmful to the most vulnerable. We’re seeing devastating consequences for infants, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. Their already fragile health is severely compromised by the lack of clean water and the prevalence of waterborne diseases.
NewsDirectory3.com:
What are the next steps HRW plans to take to address this crisis and hold the responsible parties accountable?
Tirana Hassan:
We will continue to investigate and document the situation in Gaza, exposing Israel’s culpability in this humanitarian catastrophe. We urge the international community to take concrete action to pressure Israel to end its blockade of Gaza, allow unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, and ensure the Palestinian people have access to their basic human right to water.
