President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, marking the first formal truce between the two countries since 1983. The agreement, reached after meetings in Washington between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, will take effect at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform, stating that he had just completed “excellent conversations” with both leaders and that the ceasefire would begin as fighting continued between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. He added that he would be inviting Netanyahu and Aoun to the White House for what he described as “the first meaningful talks between Israel and Lebanon since 1983, a very long time ago.”
