Israeli Minister Declares Intent to Block Palestinian State, Expand Settlements

Recent statements by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich signal a continued commitment to expanding Israeli control over the West Bank, effectively obstructing the creation of a Palestinian state. This policy is occurring amidst escalating violence and displacement in the region, and a stalled peace process.
SmotrichS Declaration and Israeli government Policy
on February 13, 2024, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated, “In practice, we are blocking the creation of a terrorist palestinian state. We will continue to develop, build and settle the land of our ancestors.” Reuters reports this declaration underscores the current Israeli government’s stance on the West Bank. The coalition government led by Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently supported the construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, despite thier illegality under international law, as defined by United Nations Security council Resolution 2334 (December 23, 2016).
Smotrich further declared in 2023 his intention for Israel to assert sovereignty over the entire West Bank. This ambition aligns with the policies of the current Netanyahu government, which includes far-right ministers advocating for annexation.
Historical Context: Occupation and Peace Efforts
Israel occupied the West Bank, along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, during the Six-Day War in 1967. Subsequent peace negotiations, most recently in 2014, envisioned the West Bank and Gaza Strip as the foundation for a future Palestinian state. However, these talks have remained frozen.
Currently, approximately three million Palestinians and around 500,000 Jewish settlers reside in the West Bank. B’Tselem, The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories provides detailed statistics on the population and settlement activity. Israeli security forces have conducted ongoing raids in West Bank camps targeting Palestinian militants, often resulting in civilian casualties. In early 2024, the Israeli army deployed tanks in raids, displacing tens of thousands of Palestinians and demolishing homes and infrastructure.
Escalation of Violence and Displacement
The situation in the West Bank has deteriorated as the formation of the current Netanyahu government in December 2022. The violence perpetrated by both Israeli security forces and Jewish radical settlers has significantly increased, particularly following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas. In response, Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Gaza.
Hamas gained control of the Gaza strip in 2007 after clashes with the Fatah movement. Fatah, led by Mahmoud Abbas, heads the Palestinian Authority, established through the Oslo Accords in the 1990s. The palestinian Authority is based in Ramallah in the West Bank and exercises limited control over parts of the territory.
