Israel has escalated its military operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon following an order from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to strike targets “with force.” The directive comes amid a period of continued hostilities between the Israeli military and the Lebanon-based armed group, despite a tenuous ceasefire that had been extended by several weeks.
On April 26, 2026, the office of Prime Minister Netanyahu published a statement instructing the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to “strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon by force.” This order followed an incident on Saturday afternoon when Hezbollah launched two rockets and a drone toward northern Israel, triggering sirens in multiple towns.
The IDF reported that it successfully intercepted the drone and one of the rockets. A second rocket struck an open area, and no injuries were reported from that specific engagement. The Israeli military intercepted a “suspicious aerial target” over an area of southern Lebanon where Israeli troops are deployed, which the IDF suspected was a Hezbollah drone.
In a separate engagement, Hezbollah deployed several explosive-laden drones against Israeli forces stationed in southern Lebanon. While the IDF stated that the drones exploded near the troops, no injuries were caused by the attack.
The Israeli military has noted a specific shift in Hezbollah’s tactics, reporting the use of small first-person view (FPV) drones. According to the IDF, some of these drones are guided using a spool of fiber optic cable, a method designed to mitigate the effectiveness of electronic jamming efforts used to disrupt drone signals.
Responding to these actions, the IDF stated that the “Hezbollah terror organization has again blatantly violated the ceasefire agreement.” In retaliation, the Israeli military conducted strikes in southern Lebanon, which resulted in the deaths of three Hezbollah operatives who were traveling in a pickup truck armed with weapons.
The conflict has also resulted in civilian casualties within Israel. In a drone attack near Rosh Hanikra, three civilians were wounded, two of whom were reported to be seriously injured.
Diplomatic Tensions and Threats
The military escalations occur against a backdrop of failed diplomatic efforts to stabilize the border. On April 27, 2026, Al Jazeera reported that Israel threatened to “burn” all of Lebanon after Hezbollah reiterated its defiance and rejected peace talks.

While the ceasefire between the warring sides had been extended by several weeks, the continued exchange of fire and the deployment of advanced drone technology indicate a fragile security environment. Hezbollah has continued to carry out multiple attacks per day on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, claiming these actions are responses to alleged Israeli provocations.
