Sweida, Syria -‍ Clashes between‍ Bedouin tribes and Druze‍ fighters have erupted in southern Syria, marking a dangerous ⁢escalation of violence in an area ⁤already grappling with instability ‍following the collapse of the ‍former Syrian⁢ goverment. The interior ministry has described the situation as a “dangerous escalation” exacerbated ⁤by the ‍”absence of the relevant official institutions,” leading to increased chaos and ‍a ‍deteriorating security situation.

UN Urges Restraint and Dialogue

The‍ United Nations ‍has expressed deep concern ‍over the ⁣ongoing violence. najat Rochdi, the UN deputy special envoy for Syria, urged both the government and local groups to “take immediate steps to protect civilians, restore calm, and prevent incitement.” Rochdi⁤ highlighted that the clashes underscore the⁢ “urgent need ⁣for genuine inclusion, trust-building, and meaningful dialogue to advance a ‍credible and inclusive‍ political transition in Syria.”

Israel Issues Warning Amidst Regional Tensions

Israel, which shares a border with Syria and has its own Druze ‍population, reported striking several tanks heading towards Sweida on monday. ⁤Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on X that the strikes were “a clear warning to⁢ the Syrian regime ‍- ⁣we will not allow harm to be done to⁤ the Druze in Syria.” This intervention ‍comes after Israeli forces seized a UN-patrolled buffer zone⁤ on Syrian territory⁢ along the border with‍ the Golan Heights in December ⁣and have conducted numerous airstrikes on Syrian military sites.

Druze minority Navigates Post-Assad Landscape

The Druze minority in Syria finds itself in a precarious position‍ following the departure⁣ of former president Bashar Assad in December during a rebel offensive. While many Druze have expressed a desire ⁤to avoid foreign intervention, some factions have grown suspicious of the new ⁢authorities in Damascus. This distrust⁣ has manifested ⁤in clashes between Druze ⁢groups ‍and forces aligned with the new government.

In May, Israeli forces targeted a⁤ site near the⁤ presidential palace in Damascus, a move interpreted as a warning to⁢ Syrian⁣ interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa. This strike followed deadly fighting between pro-government⁤ gunmen and ⁤Druze fighters in⁢ Sahnaya and the Druze-majority Damascus ‍suburb of Jaramana.

Syria’s Call for Sovereignty and Unity

Syria’s foreign ⁤ministry has ⁢called for international respect⁣ for⁣ the⁣ authority of the Syrian Arab Republic and ⁣urged countries⁢ and organizations to refrain from supporting “separatist rebel movements.” The ministry ⁣also appealed to Syrians to “cease ⁣acts of violence, surrender illegal weapons and thwart those seeking to⁣ dismantle the‍ Syrian social fabric and sow discord⁤ and division.”

The ongoing violence ⁢in Sweida highlights the complex challenges facing⁣ Syria as ⁣it navigates‍ a period of profound political transition and seeks to re-establish stability ⁤and security across ⁤the nation.
