Israel Vows to Block Aid Ship Headed ⁣to Gaza with Greta Thunberg‌ Aboard

⁤ updated June 08, 2025

Israel’s ⁤defense ⁣minister, ⁤Israel Katz, stated sunday⁢ that the Israel Defense Forces will prevent the Madleen, an
aid vessel carrying activists including Greta Thunberg, from reaching Gaza. ‍Katz said he would use “any means
necessary” to stop the ship, which departed from Sicily last week.

The Madleen is‍ attempting to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, deliver humanitarian aid, and⁤ highlight the
worsening humanitarian‌ crisis. On Sunday morning, the vessel was sailing north of Rosetta, Egypt, about 160
‌ nautical ⁢miles from Gaza, according to its live tracker.

Katz ⁤addressed thunberg and ⁢others, calling them “anti-Semitic” and “Hamas propaganda spokespeople,”⁢ and urged
⁣ them to⁤ turn back.he asserted that Israel would act against any‍ attempt to break the blockade or assist
 ⁣ terrorist organizations.

Hay Sha Wiya, a press officer for⁣ the Madleen, reported that the crew is prepared for potential interception.
Thay also noted that the boat’s signal was briefly jammed, falsely indicating the vessel was in Jordan.

Other individuals on board include Brazilian activist and politician Thiago Avila, French Member of the European
⁢ ‍ ⁢ Parliament Rima Hassan, and ‌French doctor Baptiste andre, who⁣ is prepared to⁤ treat potential injuries from
confrontations with‍ Israeli ⁣forces.

Thunberg stated last week, “We are doing this because, no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep
trying… because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity.” She added that the ‌mission’s danger
⁣⁤ was less notable than the world’s silence regarding the situation in Gaza.

Israel has denied accusations of genocide. In May, Israel eased restrictions on aid entering Gaza after warnings
of ⁣rising starvation, ending a nearly three-month blockade on essential supplies.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is distributing aid in Gaza as part of a U.S.- and ⁤Israel-backed initiative. However, its operations have faced controversy, with health officials reporting that Israeli forces have killed
dozens of Palestinians seeking aid at GHF distribution points. Experts have cautioned ⁤that Gaza faces famine
without increased aid.

A previous attempt by ‍the Freedom Flotilla to reach Gaza was thwarted last month when a ‍ship was struck by
drones in international ⁣waters near Malta. The‌ group blamed Israel for the attack, which damaged the vessel.

The Israeli ‍government maintains that the blockade is ⁣intended to pressure Hamas to release hostages taken during
the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 hostages.

according to the Palestinian ⁣Health Ministry, more than ⁢54,000 people, ‍including thousands of children, have
been killed in‌ Gaza since then.

What’s next

The Madleen continues toward Gaza, and the world awaits to see ‌if Israel will intercept the vessel and how the
‌ ‌situation will unfold, potentially impacting international‌ relations and aid efforts in the region.
