Israel Conducts Anti-Terror Operation in Jenin
Israel Launches Anti-Terror Operation in Jenin; Two Dead Amid Gaza Ceasefire
In a joint statement, the Israeli military and Shin Bet security agency announced an "anti-terror" operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, where at least two people have died, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The operation comes on the third day of a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli forces, along with Border Police, carried out the operation but provided no further details. The attack struck the Jenin refugee camp, known for active militancy, but the identities of those killed were not immediately clear.
Israel’s military chief, Herzi Halevi, had called on troops Monday to be ready for significant anti-terror operations in the West Bank in the coming days.
Jenin: A Stronghold and Flashpoint
Over the 15 months of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Jenin has been a recurring target of Israeli incursions. Last December, the Palestinian Authority launched its own operation in the area, aiming to solidify its presence in post-war Gaza governance.
Violence in the West Bank has surged during the Gaza conflict. Israel insists its operations target militancy, while the Palestinian Health Ministry reports over 800 deaths since the war began on October 7, 2023.
Trump Lifts Colono Violence Sanctions; Israeli Cop Suspended
Across the Atlantic, newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump announced the revocation of sanctions imposed last week by his predecessor, Joe Biden, against Israeli settlers suspected of violent attacks in the West Bank.
Coincidentally, an Israeli police officer has been placed under house arrest until Friday after allegations of firing on a group of settlers. The incident occurred Monday night when settlers torched Palestinian homes and vehicles in the village of Al Funduq, north of Jenin.
An initial police investigation found that the officer, along with a soldier, pursued a masked settler group that had set fire to Palestinian homes and cars. The officer reportedly opened fire after being pepper-sprayed, injuring two settlers seriously.
In nearby Jinasfut village, settlers also attacked, burning three houses, a nursery, and a carpentry workshop, along with several vehicles. A Palestinian resident suffered minor head injuries protecting his home.
Rights Group Condemns Rising Settler Violence
On January 19, settlers burned two houses and at least four vehicles in Sinjil village, Ramallah Governorate, and damaged homes in nearby Ein Siniya village, according to Israeli human rights group Yesh Din. The group decried the continued violence amid the Gaza ceasefire.
settler attacks in the occupied West Bank have escalated since October 7, 2023. In 2024 alone, the UN documented 1,432 attacks, 14% involving firebombs and other incendiary materials targeting Palestinian land, property, and vehicles.
As the first batch of 90 Palestinian detainees were released Sunday under the Gaza ceasefire deal, settler extremist groups attacked Palestinian homes and vehicles near Ramallah.
The Israeli operation in Jenin, occurring amidst a precarious ceasefire in Gaza, underscores the ongoing complexity and fragility of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While israel cites the need for “anti-terror” operations, the use of lethal force raises serious questions about proportionality and civilian casualties. The deaths in Jenin, occurring in a densely populated refugee camp, will undoubtedly fuel further tensions and complicate already strained relations.
The international community must urge all parties to exercise restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue to prevent further bloodshed and work towards a lasting peace. The need for a complete and just solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict remains more urgent than ever. The coming days and weeks will be critical in determining whether this ceasefire can hold and pave the way towards a more peaceful future.
The situation in the West Bank remains a tinderbox, with the Jenin operation a stark reminder of the volatile conditions. While the Gaza ceasefire provides a temporary lull, the underlying tensions continue to simmer. This latest outbreak of violence, coinciding with the lifting of sanctions against suspected Israeli settler violence and the suspension of a police officer, highlights the complex and deeply rooted issues at play. International pressure to de-escalate the situation is paramount, as any misstep risks further escalating the conflict with devastating consequences. Finding a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will require genuine dialog and a commitment to peace from all parties involved. The global community must stay engaged and work tirelessly towards a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live together in peace and security.
