Israel Deflects Blame for Gaza Starvation
Gaza Aid Crisis Deepens Amidst Israeli Obstruction adn Undermined claims
New assessments and on-the-ground reports reveal a deliberate pattern of impediments to humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza, exacerbating a dire crisis for a population on the brink of starvation.
Leaked US Assessment Contradicts Israeli Claims on Aid Theft
Recent analyses have cast meaningful doubt on Israel’s persistent accusations that Hamas is systematically intercepting food aid destined for Gaza. A leaked US assessment, reviewed by Reuters, found no evidence to support claims of widespread theft of US-funded humanitarian supplies by the Palestinian militant group. The assessment examined 156 incidents of reported theft or loss of US-funded supplies between October 2023 and May 2025. Crucially, it stated that none of the reports alleged Hamas benefiting from these specific supplies. This finding directly challenges a narrative that Israel has frequently employed to explain disruptions in aid delivery.
Israel’s Efforts to Undermine UN Aid Distribution
beyond the claims of Hamas theft, Israel has also intensified its efforts to attribute aid distribution problems to the United Nations, citing a “lack of cooperation from the international community and international organisations.” However, evidence suggests a contrary reality, with clear indications of Israeli actions aimed at hindering aid distribution.
Banning UNRWA Complicates Relief Efforts
Despite international warnings about the severe humanitarian risks associated with banning UNRWA, the primary UN agency for Palestinians and the association with the most extensive experience in Gaza, Israel proceeded with closing its operations. This decision has significantly complicated aid efforts, leaving a void in established distribution networks.
Reliance on Inexperienced and Controversial alternatives
In place of UNRWA, Israel, with US backing, has opted to rely on the Gaza humanitarian Foundation. This private organization is described as inexperienced and has been the subject of controversy. Its sites have unfortunately become focal points for mass killings of desperate Palestinians by Israeli soldiers, further compounding the challenges faced by aid organizations and the vulnerable population.
Continued Obstruction of Humanitarian Access
Israel’s attempts to hamper aid efforts have persisted. last week, the contry announced it would not renew the work visa of Jonathan Whittall, the most senior UN aid official in Gaza. Furthermore, a UN spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, reported that Israel had rejected eight out of sixteen UN requests to transport humanitarian aid in Gaza on a single day.
Bureaucratic and Operational Obstacles
Dujarric also highlighted that two other initially approved requests led to staff facing obstruction on the ground. He characterized these incidents as part of a broader pattern of “bureaucratic, logistical, administrative and other operational obstacles imposed by Israeli authorities.” These impediments create a climate of uncertainty and severely limit the ability of aid agencies to reach those in need.
Imminent Starvation Threat for Malnourished Children
The cumulative effect of these obstructions has injected a new and urgent dimension into the catastrophic situation in Gaza. UN agencies have issued stark warnings that they are on the verge of running out of specialized food essential for saving the lives of severely malnourished children.
Critical Shortage of Malnutrition Treatment Supplies
A World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson stated on Thursday that “Most malnutrition treatment supplies have been consumed and what is left at facilities will run out very soon if not replenished.” This critical shortage signals an certain increase in starvation deaths, a grim reality for a population already facing immense suffering and deprivation. The ongoing challenges in aid delivery threaten to push an already desperate situation into an even more catastrophic phase.
