Israel Delivers Advanced Spy Submarine ‘BlueWhale’ to Germany

Israel Delivers Advanced Spy Submarine ‘BlueWhale’ to Germany

February 26, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

Eckernförde, Germany – The German Navy has taken delivery of the BlueWhale, a large autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) developed jointly by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp, marking a significant step in Berlin’s efforts to bolster its maritime security capabilities. The handover ceremony took place on February 25, 2026, at the Eckernförde naval base in northern Germany.

The BlueWhale, first revealed in 2023, is designed for a range of missions, including unmanned anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and covert maritime operations. According to IAI, the AUV is equipped with radar and electro-optical systems for detecting surface and coastal targets, as well as sonar capabilities for identifying both manned and unmanned submarines and mapping naval mines. Thyssenkrupp’s Atlas Elektronik subsidiary contributed the BlueWhale’s towed array sonar system, highlighting the collaborative nature of the project.

The delivery of the BlueWhale underscores a growing trend among navies worldwide to invest in unmanned underwater vehicles. These systems offer extended endurance and the ability to operate in high-risk environments without putting personnel in harm’s way, making them valuable assets for protecting critical offshore infrastructure, such as undersea pipelines and cables.

German officials confirmed the AUV’s primary function will be reconnaissance and the detection of “hybrid threats at sea.” The German military described the BlueWhale as its “largest and most advanced unmanned underwater vehicle to date.”

The selection of the Baltic Sea as a testing ground for the BlueWhale is particularly noteworthy. The region has become increasingly sensitive since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with heightened tensions between Russia and NATO. Military experts and European leaders have expressed concerns about increased Russian activity in the Baltic Sea, including airspace incursions and suspected sabotage targeting undersea cables. The BlueWhale’s capabilities are therefore likely to be crucial in monitoring and safeguarding this strategically important area.

According to Thyssenkrupp, the BlueWhale is capable of “conducting reconnaissance operations, detecting targets above and below the sea surface, collecting acoustic information, and locating sea mines on the seabed.” This comprehensive suite of capabilities positions the AUV as a versatile tool for a variety of maritime security challenges.

The development and delivery of the BlueWhale also reflect a deepening defense cooperation between Israel and Germany. In January 2026, the two countries signed a security pact aimed at expanding joint work on counterterrorism and cyber defense. Germany recently approved a $3.1 billion expansion of a contract for the Arrow 3 anti-ballistic missile defense system, which is Israeli-made and developed with US support.

The increasing collaboration between Israel and Germany in defense technology is driven by shared security concerns and a mutual interest in enhancing their respective military capabilities. Israel’s expertise in unmanned systems and advanced defense technologies complements Germany’s industrial capacity and strategic location in Europe.

The BlueWhale’s arrival in the German Navy’s fleet represents not only a technological advancement but also a strategic response to the evolving security landscape in the Baltic Sea and beyond. As navies around the world continue to embrace unmanned systems, the BlueWhale is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of maritime warfare and security.
