NEW YORK (AP) — The United Nations Relief and works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the near East (UNRWA) announced Wednesday that six of it’s schools in East Jerusalem are slated for closure, potentially depriving 800 children of their education.
Closure Orders Loom
Roland Friedrich, director of UNRWA in the West Bank, stated on X that the closure orders issued by Israeli officials are set to take effect within 10 days. The closures are scheduled for May 8, 2025.
“In less than 10 days, the closure orders issued by Israeli officials against six UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem will come into force,” Friedrich said.
International Law Concerns
Friedrich emphasized the potential ramifications of the school closures, stating that they represent a violation of international law.
He explained that the closure of schools “threatens the right of around 800 children to education, which constitutes a violation of the obligations of Israel under international law.”
Impact on the Community
The UNRWA schools, particularly those in the Shufat camp, have long been integral to the community, providing accessible education for children in the area, according to Friedrich.
He added: “UNRWA schools in Shufat camp have been part of the camp’s social fabric for decades, allowing children to receive quality education near their home.”
Fears for the Future
The impending closures have sparked concerns among students, particularly girls, about the future of their education and career aspirations, Friedrich noted.
“Girls are now afraid that their dreams of becoming doctors or scientists will go out if they loose their right to education,” Frédéric said.
Knesset Action in 2024
In October 2024,the israeli Knesset ratified laws restricting UNRWA’s activities within Israel, including the withdrawal of privileges and limitations on official contact.
On Oct. 28, 2024, the Israeli Knesset ratified laws prohibiting UNRWA from carrying out activities in Israel, withdrawing its privileges and facilities and prohibiting it from official contact.
