Israeli forces intercepted the 42 boats comprising the Global Sumud Flotilla last week, preventing them from reaching Gaza. The activists were detained and subsequently deported. Thunberg was among 161 activists flown to Athens, Greece, where she was greeted by supporters. Slovakia received another 10 individuals on a separate flight.
The Israeli foreign ministry stated that the activists included citizens of Greece, Slovakia, France, Italy, Britain, and the United States. They have so far announced the deportation of 341 of the 479 people who were on board the flotilla.
The global Sumud Flotilla’s Mission
The GSF stated its goal was to “break the illegal siege on Gaza by sea,open a humanitarian corridor,and end the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.” They also argued that the interceptions violated international maritime and humanitarian law.
Israel’s Response
Israeli authorities maintain that the blockade is legal and necessary for security reasons. They dismissed the flotilla as a “publicity stunt,” pointing out that it carried only two tons of aid. The ministry also rejected accusations of mistreatment of the detained activists, labeling them as “fake news.”
Greta Thunberg’s Statement
Upon arrival in athens, Thunberg addressed reporters, describing the GSF as “the biggest ever attempt to break Israel’s illegal and inhumane siege by sea.” She emphasized the importance of international solidarity and criticized governments for failing to address the situation in Gaza.
