Israel has deported hundreds of foreign activists who were detained after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, an aid convoy attempting to reach Gaza. The deportations, which occurred on May 21, 2026, followed international outcry regarding the treatment of the participants while in Israeli custody.

The activists were detained after their vessels were intercepted by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean Sea in international waters. Following their release, dozens of participants arrived at Istanbul airport in Turkiye on May 21, 2026, where they were met by crowds of supporters.

Ankara coordinated the evacuation of 422 people via chartered flights, a group that included 85 Turkish citizens. Turkiye also deployed ambulances and doctors to provide medical treatment to the arriving participants.

Other nationalities were also repatriated. The French Foreign Ministry confirmed that 37 French nationals were among the deported group. Spanish activists arrived in Madrid on the evening of May 21, 2026, via Turkiye, and Jordan confirmed that two of its nationals returned home through the southern crossing with Israel.

The release of the activists coincided with reports of severe mistreatment. Australian participants alleged they were abused following the interception of the flotilla. Other reports indicated that detainees were subjected to physical and psychological abuse, including the use of electric shocks. Some activists claimed they were forced to beg for basic necessities, including water, food, and sanitary products.

Adding to the international tension, far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir published a video in which he taunted the detained activists while they were handcuffed. This action drew condemnation from international observers and the BBC.

Among those released was Saad Edhi, who was freed alongside the other flotilla activists.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry defended the interception and detention of the activists. Oren Marmorstein, a spokesman for the ministry, stated that all foreign activists from the flotilla had been deported.

Marmorstein further emphasized the Israeli government’s position on the maritime restrictions surrounding the enclave:

“Israel will not permit any breach of the lawful naval blockade on Gaza,”
