Senators’ Report Alleges Israel Pursuing Ethnic Cleansing in Gaza,U.S. “Complicit”
Washington D.C. – A bombshell report released by Democratic Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) and Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) accuses Israel of carrying out an ethnic cleansing campaign against Palestinians in Gaza, with the U.S. government potentially “complicit” in the unfolding tragedy. The report, a direct result of their recent fact-finding mission to Israel and Palestine, paints a grim picture of systematic displacement and collective punishment.
Van Hollen and Merkley assert that the Israeli government, under Prime Minister Netanyahu, is employing a “two-pronged approach” aimed at forcing Palestinians out of Gaza. This strategy, they argue, involves the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure and the weaponization of food and humanitarian aid.
“The goal is, in affect, to ethnically cleanse Gaza of its Palestinian population,” the senators wrote in their scathing 19-page report.
During their visit, the senators engaged with a wide range of stakeholders. In Israel, they met with families of Israeli captives, President Isaac Herzog, U.S. Ambassador mike Huckabee, and World Food Program Executive Director Cindy McCain. The senators also planned to join a Jordanian air force aid airdrop mission over Gaza, but were denied clearance by Israel.
Their journey also took them to the occupied West Bank, where they heard harrowing accounts of settler violence from Palestinians and met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who highlighted the “severe economic uncertainty” caused by U.S.and Israeli sanctions and regulations. While the report primarily focuses on the dire situation in Gaza, the senators also warned that the West Bank is experiencing “ethnic cleansing in slow motion.”
The senators’ findings raise serious questions about the ongoing conflict and the role of the United States in the region. Their report is sure to ignite further debate and scrutiny of U.S. policy towards Israel and Palestine.
