Published November 22, 2023. updated November 23, 2023.
The Decision and its Rationale
AVROTROS announced its withdrawal on November 22,2023,explaining that participation in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest is “incompatible with the essential values” of the broadcaster. This decision follows reports made to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) as early as September 2025 regarding “serious humanitarian suffering in the Gaza Strip,” as well as concerns about “the suppression of press freedom and political interference during the last edition of the competition.”
The broadcaster emphasized its commitment to “reliability, independence and humanity” as its guiding principles.AVROTROS stated that the current circumstances surrounding the contest, notably Israel’s participation, conflicted with these values.
Context: The EBU and Israel’s Participation
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is responsible for organizing the Eurovision Song Contest. Its rules state that participating broadcasters must be active members of the EBU and that entries must adhere to certain criteria, including being original and not carrying political messages. Though, the interpretation of “political” has been a source of ongoing debate.
Israel has participated in Eurovision since 1973 and has won the contest four times (1978, 1998, 2018, and 2021). Despite calls for Israel’s exclusion from the 2024 contest due to the conflict in Gaza, the EBU has maintained that a blanket ban would be a political act and would contradict the contest’s non-political stance. The EBU has stated it is monitoring the situation and will assess whether israel’s participation meets the contest’s rules.
This decision by the Netherlands is not the first instance of controversy surrounding Israel’s participation. In the past, there have been calls for boycotts and protests, but this is the first time a major broadcaster has withdrawn specifically citing the situation in Gaza as the primary reason.
other Countries Considering Withdrawal
The Netherlands is not alone in its concerns. Several other countries are reportedly considering withdrawing from the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. While no official announcements have been made as of November 23, 2023, broadcasters in Iceland, Finland, and Belgium have publicly debated the issue and are facing increasing pressure from artists, activists, and the public to boycott the contest.
A petition calling for Israel’s exclusion from Eurovision has garnered over 10,000 signatures.
