Israeli Forces intercept Greta Thunberg’s Gaza Aid boat
Updated June 09, 2025
The Israeli Foreign Ministry reports that the Madleen, a humanitarian aid boat headed to Gaza with Swedish activist Greta Thunberg aboard, has been intercepted. The vessel is being directed to Israel, where passengers will be processed and afterward returned to their respective countries.
According to the ministry, the sailing boat “is heading safely to the coasts of Israel.” This proclamation followed claims from the NGO Freedom Flotilla, which chartered the ship, that Israeli forces had “affected” the vessel. The organization stated on Telegram that communications with the Madleen were cut off and alleged the crew was “kidnapped by Israeli forces.” The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza amid a continued blockade.
Defense Minister Israel Katz previously stated his resolve to prevent the Madleen from reaching Gaza. He addressed Thunberg and the other volunteers, urging them to turn back. The 18-meter sailing ship had departed from catania on June 1, navigating toward Gaza through Egyptian territorial waters. The vessel carried humanitarian aid and a crew of volunteers from various countries.
Israel has reiterated its stance that it will not permit violations of the naval blockade, which has been in effect since October 9, 2023. This blockade aims to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas.
The incident involving the Madleen echoes previous attempts to breach the Gaza blockade, including the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla, where 10 activists died during an Israeli military operation.
“Israel will not allow anyone to break the naval block of Gaza, who aims to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas: a group of assassin terrorists who holds a group of ours as hostages and commits war crimes,” Katz said.
Simultaneously occurring, violence continues in Gaza. Recent reports indicate that several civilians were killed while waiting for food near a distribution point run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
What’s next
The activists aboard the Madleen now face deportation from Israel. The future of humanitarian aid shipments to Gaza remains uncertain amid the ongoing blockade and regional tensions. The incident is highly likely to fuel further debate and scrutiny of Israel’s policies regarding Gaza.
