Israel Gaza Access Media Groups Plea
Gaza Journalists Face Starvation and Silencing Amidst Escalating Conflict
Gaza City, July 24, 2025 – Journalists covering the ongoing conflict in Gaza are facing an increasingly dire situation, battling extreme scarcity of food, clean water, and medical care, which is severely hampering their ability to report on the ground. The stark realities of their daily struggle have been highlighted by the AFP news agency, drawing global calls for the protection of these frontline witnesses.
Daily Struggle with Enforced Starvation
The AFP news agency has recently published accounts from its reporters detailing the “appalling situation” they endure, characterized by a relentless daily fight for sustenance.Omar al-Qattaa,a 35-year-old AFP photographer who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist earlier this year, described the debilitating effects of hunger. “We have no energy left due to hunger and lack of food,” he stated.
Video journalist Youssef Hassouna, who has been covering the Gaza war for 21 months, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the immense difficulty in obtaining basic necessities.”Obtaining food in Gaza is extremely challenging.Even when it is available, prices are multiplied by 100,” Hassouna reported.
Israel maintains that humanitarian aid is being permitted into Gaza, while accusing Hamas of exploiting civilian suffering. The Israeli government claims Hamas is involved in stealing food handouts to sell at inflated prices and shooting at those awaiting aid.
However, the World Health Institution’s chief issued a stark warning on Wednesday, reporting widespread starvation in Gaza and stating that food deliveries into the territory were “far below what is needed for the survival of the population.” Witnesses and Gaza’s civil defense agency have repeatedly accused Israeli forces of firing on individuals seeking aid. The United Nations has reported that Israeli forces have killed over 1,000 Palestinians attempting to access food since late May.
In response to the escalating dangers, AFP successfully evacuated eight staff members and their families from Gaza between January and april 2024, following months of concerted efforts.
Global Call to Protect gaza’s Journalists
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a prominent media freedom advocacy group, issued a statement on Wednesday asserting that Israel is “starving Gazan journalists into silence.”
“They are not just reporters, they are frontline witnesses, abandoned as international media were pulled out and denied entry,” said CPJ regional director Sara Qudah.
Many Palestinian journalists have publicly shared their exhaustion and the toll the conflict is taking. The CPJ noted that Sally Thabet, a correspondent for Al-Kofiya satellite channel, fainted after a live broadcast this week.
Doha-based al Jazeera, a highly influential Arabic media group, also appealed for global action to safeguard journalists in Gaza on tuesday. The channel, which has been banned in Israel, has reported the deaths of five of its reporters since the conflict began, alleging a intentional targeting campaign by Israel. In some instances, Israel has accused journalists of being “terror operatives,” a claim vehemently condemned by the Qatari news network, especially in the case of a Gaza-based Al Jazeera staff journalist and freelancer killed last year.
“We certainly know that probably most journalists inside Gaza are operating under the auspices of Hamas, and until hamas is destroyed, they will not be allowed to report freely,” stated Israeli government spokesman David Mercer at a press conference last December.
