Escalating Conflict and Civilian Impact
After 22 months of conflict, the situation in Gaza is reaching a critical point. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are intensifying operations in Gaza City, describing Hamas as “battered and bruised” but far from defeated. preliminary actions are already underway, with IDF troops positioned on the outskirts of the city, and brigades operating in the Zeitoun and Jabalia neighborhoods. These operations have uncovered underground tunnels containing weapons, according to IDF spokesperson brigadier general Effie Defrin.
The stated aim of the IDF is to dismantle Hamas’s infrastructure and reduce the association’s control over the civilian population. though, this escalation comes at a devastating cost for civilians. On Wednesday alone, Israeli strikes reportedly killed 25 people across Gaza, including a family of five – three children and their parents – in the Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City. The situation is described as “very risky and unbearable” by mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s Hamas-run Civil Defence agency, especially in the Zeitoun and Sabra neighborhoods.
Evacuation Orders and Humanitarian Crisis
The IDF claims it is taking steps to “minimise harm to civilians” by warning residents of Gaza City to evacuate. however, the scale of displacement and the lack of safe havens raise serious concerns about the feasibility and effectiveness of these warnings. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned of a catastrophic situation
if military activity intensifies, emphasizing the exhaustion of the Gazan population and their desperate need for basic necessities – food, water, medical supplies, and shelter. The ICRC is urgently calling for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access.
hostage Negotiations and Political Obstacles
The fate of the 50 hostages still held by Hamas remains a central concern. Families of the hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive, fear a ground offensive in Gaza City could endanger their loved ones.Mediators Qatar and Egypt have proposed a 60-day truce and the release of approximately half of the hostages, a proposal Hamas reportedly accepted on Monday. Though, Israel has not formally responded, and officials are now demanding a comprehensive
deal for the release of all hostages. Hamas, in turn, accuses Israeli Prime minister Benjamin netanyahu of obstructing the ceasefire efforts, calling him the real obstructionist of any agreement
according to a Reuters report.
ancient Context and Current Toll
The current conflict began in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7,2023,which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. As then, the conflict has resulted in a staggering loss of life in Gaza. As of August 20, 2025, at least 62,122 Palestinians have been killed, according to the territory’s health ministry – figures consistently cited by the United Nations as the most reliable available.
